"Got the holiday blues?"
The holiday season can be extremely stressful for some!
Some folks never seem to find joy or happiness in any aspect of life. Some are constantly bitter and grumpy. It is hard to know how to help such people, except to help them see that a life truly surrendered to Christ is a happy life. (Philippians 4:4-7.) But sometimes there are those whose optimism and joyfulness all year long seems to dissipate once the holiday season begins. How do we help these friends to regain their joy? Often their reason for unhappiness has to do with a recent loss of someone they love within their family (perhaps a mate). The thought of their loved one’s absence from the traditional family gatherings is heartbreaking and difficult for them to face. And so to avoid the pain, they may begin to withdraw from traditional family gatherings and social events even church services. To their friends they suddenly appear gloomy and down. If you see someone who seems “out of character” and slipping into this slump during the holiday season you may wish to make a special effort to try to lift their spirits. Sometimes just being with others and making conversation can help. Perhaps your cheerful and optimistic spirit and laughter will help bring some hurting friend a measure of joy and help them shake the slump. Such goodwill and such a gift of compassion may be the best gift you give all year long. If you’re reading this and you feel the holiday blues, give me a call. As a Christian, I have found there is much to be cheerful about - so call me and I’ll be glad to tell you why.
