“I’m going to hang up now Fred, I’ve already told you much more than I heard!”

Sometimes good people, without realizing the harm they may be doing, will gossip or repeat rumors! It seems like such a small thing. But it can be sinful and harmful. Small towns are especially vulnerable to spreading rumors that may not be true. It is always best to check your facts and consider the source of what you have heard before repeating it. And if what you have heard may be harmful or derogatory toward another, then it is best to follow the golden rule and not say anything. Remember before you repeat something you have heard always ask yourself these questions: “Is this true? Is this kind? Is it necessary that I repeat this? Some things may be true but not kind and not necessary that they be repeated! James 3:2 reminds us, “For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.” Self control begins with tongue-control.
